Atmosphere: Matty B's is very rich and masculine; walls lined with mahogony and cherry woodwork and deep leather booths. It was dimly lit (I don't recall seeing a single window). It was a beautiful evening outside which might explain why the restaurant was nearly deserted on on Thursday night.
Menu: Appetizers include olive dip, steamed clams, walleye crab cakes, escargot, baked brie encroute, smoked fish pate', spinach and artichoke dip, cold poached shrimp. Entrees include sirloin, porterhouse or tenderloin steaks, meatloaf, pork chops, sauteed shrimp, broiled tuna, encrusted halibut, linguini and clams, salmon, baked chicken and pot roast.
Price guide: Appetizers $6-15 Entrees $17-38
What I ordered: It is customary at Matty B's to get a relish tray and french bread, but my companions and I also ordered the spinach & artichoke dip. I have to say that the three of us agreed that we expected more than cream-cheese infused with tiny chunks of artichokes for $9, because that is basically what it was. It was good, just boring. I prefer it with a blend of cheeses and additional spices. This spread would be great on a bagel for breakfast!
My main dish was the PASTA REALI $24(Olive oil, garlic artichoke hearts, tomato, onion, black olive and white wine. Served over linguini with shrimp.) I ordered mine w/o black olives. This dish was pretty good. I loved that it had 6 giant shrimp and several big clumps of artichokes. Wish that it had more garlic and was a little spicier...the main flavor was the artichoke. Decent size portion, but I probably could've eaten the entire thing if I hadn't had an appetizer! I guess I expect to be STUFFED after spending $24, kwim?
One of my companions ordered the cajun shrimp caesar salad.
My other companion ordered the encrusted halibut. Said it was very good, but priced higher than it should be.
Service: Excellent. We had our choice of tables and we were our server's only table
Overall Impression: Very nice, but pricey for what you get.
